What is steam inhalation?
Steam inhalation therapy is a common non-pharmacological treatment to soothe respiratory problems such as coughs, colds, and sore throats. This therapy has been around since ancient times. The ancient Egyptians were the first known users of inhalation therapy. They used dry plants and minerals in their concoction of steam therapy. In this method medicinal plants were put in near- boiling water, in order to inhale the therapeutic steam.

This widely used home remedy method helps to ease and open up the nasal passages, which in turn provides relief from cold or sinus infection symptoms. Though steam inhalation doesn’t serve as a cure for infections such as colds or the flu, it helps make you feel a lot better while your body fights it off. Inhaling moist, warm steam helps to ease the feelings of irritation and swollen blood vessels in the nasal passages. This helps to breathe normally, at least for a short period of time. Furthermore, a warm steam inhalation routine before bedtime may also help relax and increase deep sleep and improve quality for people with mild sleep issues and anxiety. Also the warming nature of the steam is often extremely comforting when emotions are low.
